Debra Muren Scholarship
Debra Muren Scholarship, administered by Bellevue Schools Foundation is a three-year scholarship, $2,000 each year (increased in 2024) to celebrate a student from Health Careers Program.
Debra Jean Muren was a dedicated direct care nurse and compassionate caregiver, as well as a Bellevue Parent. After her death from early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2010, her family established the scholarship in her memory to support Bellevue students pursuing nursing degrees.

Earning the Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts, was a transformative experience that strengthened my leadership skills and reinforced my passion for community service. My project focused on educating younger generations about the global decline of pollinators through hands-on learning and accessible resources. To engage elementary school students, I created a 32-page educational booklet filled with interactive activities and projects. I made it available online and distributed it at farmers' markets and community events to expand its reach. In addition, I led workshops for over 50 children, guiding them as we built pollinator shelters together. To further support pollinators, I organized a tree-planting event, during which we planted over 200 native trees to improve local habitats. Volunteering has always been a vital part of my life, and this initiative reminded me of the importance of turning ideas into meaningful action. As I continue to seek new opportunities to make a difference, I remain committed to being an action-oriented leader who contributes meaningfully to my community.
I have realized that my future lies in nursing—a profession that combines my interest in science and my desire to help others. Nurses are more than caregivers; they are problem solvers, advocates, and sources of comfort in vulnerable moments. The ability to make a tangible impact on someone's life is a privilege I deeply respect, and I look forward to embracing that responsibility. Beyond providing care, I am committed to addressing healthcare disparities. Everyone deserves access to quality medical services, regardless of their background. I am driven to advocate for those who feel unheard and help bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility. Though the path ahead will be challenging—long hours, rigorous coursework, and hands-on training—I welcome the journey. I chose the University of Washington for its affordability and academic excellence.
