Carla Vendeland Community Service Award
Carla Vendeland Community Service Award
Newport High School Parent, Carla Vendeland worked endlessly to fight world hunger, staying up late researching and writing letters in tireless campaigns against world hunger and for education. As part of her effort to encourage students to volunteer, she created the PTSA Knight Valor Program in 1989, recognizing Newport Students who make a difference in their community through their extraordinary volunteer efforts.
Mrs. Vendeland passed away in 1994 of cancer at the age of 52, and in her memory and in honor of her dedication to our community, the Carla B. Vendeland Community Service Award was established in 1996. The award is administered by the Bellevue Schools Foundation. To qualify for the award, students need to be a graduating senior and need to have earned the PTSA Knight Valor Award.
Newport High School Winners: 2024 - 2025
Anu Dhananjay
Anu is deeply committed to her school and community. Throughout high school, she served as a student Equity Representative in leadership, played on the varsity Girls' Golf team, and was a dedicated member of the Newport Band’s percussion section for four years. Outside of school, Anu volunteered at Swedish Medical Center for over nine months through the COPE Junior Health Scholars program, furthering her passion for helping others. This fall, she will attend Case Western Reserve University as a Neuroscience major on the pre-medical track. Anu looks forward to building on her experiences as a leader and volunteer to make a lasting impact in college and beyond.
Caleb Li
Over the past four years, Caleb has been involved with his community both in and out of school. He was president of Newport's HOSA club and was an officer of the Red Cross club, helping organize various events. He was also active in the PNW's MUN scene, helping plan conferences and committees for high schoolers throughout the greater Seattle area. The summer before junior year, he served as a community crew member for the Student Conservation Association, where he went to trails and habitats across the state and did tasks like invasive species removal and gravel installation. He continued these stewardship efforts throughout the next two years through community cleanups at parks and beaches. Caleb will be attending Johns Hopkins University next school year on the pre-med track, and hopes to conduct research looking at the interplay between the environment and human health.
